Framework for Delivery of Orientation Activities
Many initiatives at CU Anschutz, including the DOM Research Listening Tour, have identified campus complexity, with no centralized way to find or navigate research resources, as a major barrier to success. A modified PECS (purpose, expectations, connections, support) model can be used to deliver orientation to available research resources across three domains: 1) Basic and Preclinical, 2) Clinical, and 3) Health Outcomes and Data/Bioinformatics research. Overall, the modified PECS model provides the unified framework for orientation activities across domains.
Purpose To provide awareness of campus research resources and how to access them
Expectations Assemble research resources and provide simple, efficient ways to find them
Connections Domain specific as detailed herein
Support Up-to-date landing page/s and online resources; concierge help

Mode of Delivery
Orientation services are vital for both new and existing faculty. One in person event per year, at the time of new faculty orientation, coupled with searchable, online navigation services could be used to deliver research resource orientation information. The few basic and preclinical researchers surveyed informally at lab meetings or in person indicated that online content would be preferred over in person orientation sessions. Online content could be disseminated via Departmental and Vice Chancellor for Research regular email communiques, through Division and Section Heads and administrators, through the Postdoctoral Office, and at existing, regularly scheduled research events (eg. Research Days, seminar series), with concierge options if more specific help is needed.

Opportunities
In considering this project, it has become apparent that some fundamental basic and preclinical resources do not have adequate training and instruction documentation, particularly for IACUC and IBC applications. For clinical research many such opportunities exist (eg. CTSA33 presentations, standard templated language). This may be an additional opportunity for further improvements to assist basic and preclinical researchers.
