About Us
The Informatics Core of the Colorado Clinical & Translational Sciences Institute (CCTSI) provides secure, HIPAA-compliant infrastructure and expert services to support clinical and translational research across the University of Colorado Anschutz Campus and its affiliated institutions. The Core manages and maintains a suite of integrated systems - including servers, databases, and applications - that enable researchers to securely store, retrieve, and analyzes sensitive health data.
Our Mission
The CCTSI Informatics Core empowers translational researchers by providing the tools, infrastructure, and expertise needed to transform data into discovery. We help investigators:
- Identify and access the clinical and research data they need through secure, HIPAA-complaint platforms.
- Store, manage, and analyze data using scalable, integrated systems tailored to research workflows.
- Share findings responsibly and efficiently to accelerate scientific collaboration and impact.
- Foster a collaborative learning environment for bioinformaticians and health informaticians to grow, innovate, and advance the field of translational informatics.

Database Hosting & Storage
Secure, HIPAA-compliant database hosting with managed backups, system maintenance, and scalable resources to support research and operational data needs.
Application Development & Storage
Design, enhancement, and maintenance of web-based applications supporting grant, scientific, and protocol review workflows.
Server & Security Management
Compliant infrastructure with robust access control, system monitoring, and ongoing vulnerability management to ensure secure and reliable operations
Data Management Consulting
Guidance on data governance, security, and best practices to support compliant and efficient data use.
Web Design & Consulting
Support for departmental websites and lightweight tools, including forms, calendars, and communication-focused solutions
REDCap & Research Support
Secure REDCap hosting and consultation for research and quality improvement projects.
REDCap is a free, auditable, HIPAA-compliant tool for the creation of study databases and surveys.

Project scope and pricing are defined through consultation and formal service agreements based on complexity and resource needs
Anschutz Campus IT Research Resources
Faculty and staff at the CU Anschutz Campus can explore and compare research computing resources through this tool, designed by the School of Medicine, Office of Regulatory Compliance, and Information Strategy and Services.

Clinical Data for Research
Clinical Research Informatics & Innovation Unit (CRIIU)
The Clinical Research Informatics & Innovation Unit (CRIIU) supports investigator-led research and digital health innovation at the CU Anschutz Campus and UCHealth. CRIIU specializes in integrating and customizing Epic and non-Epic clinical informatics systems to enable research embedded in clinical workflows. By providing technical expertise, data integration, and informatics infrastructure, CRIIU helps investigators develop scalable solutions that enhance research impact and improve competitiveness for external funding.
Health Data Compass
Compass integrates a variety of patient data from UCHealth, Children's Hospital of Colorado, CU Medicine (formerly UPI), and UC Denver. Health Data Compass restructures and harmonizes this data to make it more useful for a variety of uses. Data from UCHealth and CHCO goes back historically to 2011 and is current to the month.
Health Data Compass also integrates data on patients from UCHealth and Children's Hospital of Colorado electronic medical record (EMR) from other sources outside of the EMR such as the Colorado State Death Registry and CIVHC's All Payer Claims Database (APCD).
