Pre-F (NRSA Fellowships) Grant Review Program

This program helps students and postdocs prepare and submit successful applications to the NIH for their individual NRSA (F30, F31, F32) fellowships. We provide an informational workshop, some one-on-one advising to applicants who are preparing fellowship applications, and a pre-submission mock grant review. Participants for this program will receive insight into the grant review process, hear discussions of the applications by local reviewers, and receive written reviews. Participants will get this feedback in time to incorporate suggestions and make revisions before their submission of the final proposal to NIH. All participants receiving reviews are required to attend the mock study section.

Am I eligible?

Any PhD student, MD/PhD student, or Postdoctoral Fellow on CU Anschutz Campus planning to submit a Pre-F level NRSA Fellowship.

A letter of intent is required. Please only submit a letter if you are planning to participate in the review session as this is how we select our reviewers and plan for the mock session. Include your specific aims when you submit the letter of intent. Your suggestions on possible reviewers are also required.

All applicants should attend the Pre-F Application Tips and Tricks workshop (Jan 12, 2024 9am-10am) prior to submitting an LOI. If you are unable to attend, please contact a Program Director.

The full application must include the following sections (if they are not submitted, the grant will not be reviewed) in one PDF file:

Candidate Biosketch
Sponsor(s) Biosketch
Applicant background and goals for fellowship training including past research, training goals and objectives
Specific aims
Research strategy and references
Sponsor statement, if a co-sponsor, either a letter from co-sponsor or a section in the ‘sponsor statement’ detailing their role and commitment to the trainee
If letters of support from consultants and collaborators are not yet available, then a list of letters that will be obtained before submission to NIH
If a resubmission, reviews from previous round and response to reviewers
